Washington Post app comes to iPad

Joining other prominent newspapers, the Washington Post today introduced a native iPad application. The iPad version of the paper contains all print articles, as well as access to blogs. Some app-specific features include photo and video galleries, and offline caching for reading when away from Internet access.

Another distinguishing feature is Live Topics, which combines popular stories with comments being posted to Twitter and Facebook. The app is a free download, but requires registering a web account with the Post, and will ultimately require a paid subscription for full access after February 15th. It’s not clear what kind of limited free content might be available after the deadline.

The Post is not the only newspaper on the iPad going behind a paywall. The New York Times will be restricting free access sometime in “early 2011,” though it has yet to set a more precise date. Like the Post, the Times has also not decided on what content should remain free.
