Hasbro offering hand-held 3D viewer for iPhone, iPod Touch

Toymaker Hasbro is offering a 21st-century take on the old GAF ViewMaster, creating a handheld viewer called My3D that incorporates recent-model iPhones or iPod Touches along with stereoscopic apps to produce immersive 3D and in some instances 360-degree panoramic experiences. Among the apps available are a showcase app with samples of the others; 360-degree photo tours of Los Angeles or inside a computer-generated shark cage, or games such as manning a virtual gunner station on a space ship.

The viewer, which resembles a plastic set of binoculars, features a cradle at the end that houses the iPhone or iPod Touch, but still allows users to access the display in order to interact with the app. The viewer is compatible with the iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G as well as the second, third, and fourth-generation iPod Touches and is expected to sell for $35.

The supporting My3D apps are all free at present, and include the titles My3D Presents, My3D 360° Sharks, My3D Sector 17, My3D Teleport L.A., My3D Bubble Bolt, My3D Tunnel Pilot and My3D Shatterstorm. Hasbro has also announced that they are working with 3D entertainment providers such as Dreamworks, Sony, 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. for future content and 3D theatrical trailers.

The Hasbro My3D viewer will be available exclusively at Target stores and starting April 3rd and will appear at other retailers throughout the US starting in June. My3D apps are available for download now.
