After years of rumors about the iPhone landing on Verizon Wireless, when the announcement finally came in January, the actual launch of the iPhone 4 on the carrier seemed anti-climactic — but fear not, the real excitement will come with the next model.
All Things Digital’s Digital Daily is reporting that despite what appears to be modest demand for the iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless, the real excitement will come when the carrier gets their hands on the next model, presumably the iPhone 5 — but who knows if that will be in June, September or even early next year.
Apple has been uncharacteristically quiet when it comes to sales figures on the Verizon iPhone 4, a silence that may end next Wednesday when the company releases quarterly financial results. One thing is for sure: The crowds didn’t turn out for the Verizon iPhone the way we all expected after years of media hype.
However, that may have more to do with the fact that most people who wanted an iPhone all these years have already caved in and gotten one from AT&T. With Verizon Wireless CEO Daniel Mead claiming that 60 percent of the company’s iPhone sales were online, that doesn’t leave too many people to form the crowds we’re used to seeing at a true iPhone launch.
That means the real excitement will likely come with the next new model — and hopefully Verizon is prepared for it.
“We note that the Verizon iPhone launch has widely been perceived as a disappointment,” said analyst Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray. “But in some ways, we see the iPhone 5 as the true Verizon iPhone launch; the first time Verizon customers will have access to a new version of the iPhone. We believe that many Verizon customers made the decision to wait and purchase the iPhone 5 when it launches instead of buying the mid-cycle iPhone 4.”
With Apple expected to finally start selling the white iPhone 4 in the next few weeks, we can only imagine that demand will be even lower for that fabled handset — although with pent-up demand and uncertainty about exactly when the company will unveil a new iPhone, some users might be driven into the arms of that pearly white glass and silicon slab just the same.
