Apple has just released iOS 6.1.4 (build 10B329) for the iPhone 5, and it is now available to download. More details and the download links can be found right after the jump.
The aforementioned iOS 6.1.4 update is without a doubt a really minor one and pertains to an “Updated audio profile for speakerphone”. For now, the update is available only for the iPhone 5 and is not available for any other iOS device. Weighing in at just 11.5MB for the OTA update, we’re certain the changes in this update are really minor.
The speakerphone profile sets the parameters for the quality of audio produced, and although the 11.5MB update file size would seem a bit bulky for an update of this kind, Apple hasn’t specified anything else in the release notes. Of course, one or two tweaks or alterations may have been sneaked into the bargain, but if this is indeed the case, the newly updated profile is the only feature Apple deemed necessary to make note of.
Obviously, if your iPhone is on iOS 6.1.2 or earlier and you’re jailbroken or indeed wish to jailbreak in the future, you’ll want to steer well clear of this particular release. As has been noted by the jailbreak community on numerous occasions, all new discoveries related to a post-iOS 6.1.2 jailbreak are being saved up for a more significant release in the future, so do not update if you feel like you may be compelled to install Cydia in the foreseeable future.
With Apple said to be ploughing most of its resources into the construction of the Jony Ive-inspired iOS 7, perhaps it’s fitting that this release is very, very minor, and a testament to how few staff members within Cupertino are actually working on iOS 6 at this point in time.
From what we’ve been hearing, the skeuomorphic elements within the company’s mobile ecosystem are set to be wiped out, with flat, clean surfaces taking their place. The clean-up job has already seen Apple borrowing staff from the OS X team to help get the preview ready for WWDC 2013, and with some big changes touted after several rather mundane iOS releases, we certainly cannot wait for the big unveiling.
In the meantime, if you’ve no commitments to jailbreak and wish to update your iPhone 5 to iOS 6.1.4 to reap the benefits of the updated speakerphone audio profile, please either use the Software Update feature located within your device’s Settings app, or plug in and update via iTunes though the direct download links below:
