Today, Google released the — what else? — Google Map Maker, an app that enables people to add to and update Google maps for various locations around the globe. Currently, only 15 percent of the world’s population has actual detailed maps of their neighborhoods, so this project will hopefully encourage users to contribute to maps of their ‘hoods.
Map Makers works to map out entire cities, road networks and even college universities that weren’t previously recorded online, and users can even tack on bike paths, as well as building names and minor landmarks. It’ll make it easy for visitors to look around and check out the local surroundings with landmarks that might not otherwise be labeled on a standard digital map.
You can head over to mapmaker.google.com to try out the Map Maker yourself.
