Napster app reaches the iPhone

Napster is back (well it has been for a while), and while it isn’t really the same service that became so very legendary back in 1999 (new management), it is now available — on your iPhone.

That’s right, Apple has approved subscription-based music service Napster for use as an app on the iPhone. The app was made available last night and lets you save songs, albums and playlists for offline playback. You also get music recommendations.

The app is free to download, but requires a Napster plus Mobile Access subscription to use, which costs $10 a month.

With music subscription services such as Rhapsody, Napster, Thumbplay, Rdio and Mog already available on the iPhone, does Apple really need to focus on its own music streaming services for the device?
